The Principal as Lead Learner
Facilitator: Mrs. Cathy Baum, Digital Teaching & Learning; Principal Panelists: Bill Schreiber, Caldwell County Schools; Cassaundra Morrison, Elkin City Schools; Charles Williams, Burke County Schools; Rene Stillwell, Alexander County Schools; The Digital Learning Competency for Content and Instruction states, “Administrators will be the ‘lead learners’ in their schools, modeling appropriate instructional practices and ensuring content encompasses appropriate digital tools, resources, and pedagogies.” In relationship to this competency for administrators, principal panelists will share how they are ‘lead learners’ within their schools and districts.

MTSS: District and School Implementation
Facilitator: Ms. Susan Laney, MTSS consultant; Ms. April Marr, Student Services Director, Wilkes County Schools
This session will provide a very brief introduction to the NCDPI professional development and support for MTSS. For most the session, a district and school administrator will share their implementation of MTSS using the NCDPI support while tailoring implementation for their specific district. There will be time for question/answer at the end of the session.

Effective Instructional Leadership
Presentor: Dr. Kimberly Simmons, NCEES consultant
Nothing in the principal's role is more important for ensuring successful student learning than effective instructional leadership. Monitoring what takes place at the classroom level will increase the likelihood that schools will achieve their goals for student learning. This session focuses on School Executive Standard 2: Instructional Leadership and best practices to ensure a focus on curriculum, instruction and assessment.

What is NCStar?
Presenter: Mr. Alessandro Montanari, Federal Programs; Michelle Baker, Principal Eastfield Global Magnet; McDowell County Schools
Participants will learn about the online tool that over 1,400 schools have chosen to use in North Carolina to manage their school improvement process. This is a quick introduction for those that are curious about the tool and not an actual in-depth training.

Principal Networking and Roundtable
Facilitators: Dr. Monica Shepherd and Mrs. DeAnna Foust-Platt, Regional Education Facilitators
The principals will enjoy discussing with each other topics such as professional learning community, lesson planning, Multi-tiered statewide system of support, Beginning Teacher Support and data analysis.

Inquiry Based Learning through MAPSS
Presenter: Ms. Penny Willard, Mt. Airy Schools and District Representatives
Join us to learn first hand how teachers and students across the region have been impacted through professional development that develops the inquiry-based learning environment. A panel of teachers, principals and central office support personnel will share how both problem/project-based learning have shifted the mindset of both students and teachers. The team will share successes and challenges with participating in a consortium. Principals will learn the importance of instructional coaching and how it can be used to build and enhance their teacher leadership skills.

Presenter: Ms. Jaime Kelley; Testing and Accountability, NCDPI; Mr. Ryan McCreary, Principal Jenkins Elementary School; Hickory City Schools
The North Carolina Department of Public Instruction (NCDPI) is developing a through-grade assessment model for grades 3 through 8 in English language arts/reading and mathematics. The model consists of three benchmark assessments administered during the school year and a stand-alone summative assessment administered at the end of the year. This session will provide an overview of the NC Check-Ins and highlight the different reports available for teachers to use in order to guide their instruction.

KEA/K-3 Formative Assessment Process: Supporting Teachers
Presenters: Dr. Cindy Dewey and Dr. Nicole Galloway, Office of Early Learning, NCDPI
How can Principals support teachers as they implement the KEA/K-3 Formative Assessment Process? In this session, regional consultants from the Piedmont Triad and Northwest will share administrators' perspectives on this work and answer frequently asked questions about the Formative Assessment Process. In addition, the presenters will provide resources for administrators to use as they support their teachers

Supporting Math Instruction (at secondary level)
Presenter: Dr. Jennifer Curtis, Section Chief for Mathematics, NCDPI; Dr. Kimberly Hewitt, Educational Leadership and Cultural Foundations; UNC-Greensboro

This session will explore the NC Collaboration for Math Learning in support of the implementation of revised high school math standards, an innovative partnership between NCDPI and UNCG. During the session, principals will receive information about tools currently available for increasing support of math teaching and learning (grades 6-12).

EVAAS Opportunities facilitated by SAS
Based on the feedback provided at during Fall 2016 Principal READY meetings, Educator Effectiveness, in collaboration with SAS, present EVAAS sessions for the North Area. These stand-alone sessions are designed to meet a variety of levels. It is not necessary that you attend all sessions. However, the “Leading with EVAAS” and “EVAAS 201” sessions will be most beneficial if you have prior introductory experience with EVAAS.

Leading with EVAAS: Administrator Edition
In July, schools will be able to bring an administrative team for a day-long session with facilitators from SAS. As this is an advanced session, please make sure you have attended an introductory EVAAS session prior to the July session.

Service Support Team
The Statewide System of Support is comprised of four service support teams. Within these area teams, cross-agency staff members collaborate to serve the state's eight prosperity zones, by collecting and analyzing data to identify common needs and offer customized support for school improvement by engaging in the following:
  • Analyze data to develop and implement targeted professional learning
  • Identify and develop resources for educator growth and improvement
  • Guide LEAs and Charters with effective resource allocation decisions
  • Assess and modify the quality and alignment of the services provided by the team
